Fish Creel Birch Bark

This traditional Fish Creel made from Birch Bark hails from Ottawa Canada! The crafter crafted it from a single sturdy panel of birch bark bound with spruce root lacing. They added a band of ash around the rim for stability and made a lid from two layers of birch bark. The lid has a 3 1/2" by 2 1/4" opening for dropping fish through. The crafter then used braintan mooseskin lace to make a long shoulder strap, closures, and tie the lid onto the creel. Finally, they created a fish motif on the front and lid by scratching away the top layer of bark. The creel also comes with a tag crediting the maker and place of origin, which reads "The Snow Goose for Canadian Arts and Crafts, specializing in Indian and Inuit Arts, Crafts, and Artifacts." The handwritten portion of the tag reads "Veronique, Ottawa, Algonquin, Manawan, Quebec."
Around 20 years old, this fish creel is in great condition and still usable! There is a visible crack on the lid, likely from age and exposure to moisture. However, this does not detract from the overall appearance and function of the creel. The top is 9 1/2" by 7 1/4" wide, and the base is 12" by 8". The shoulder strap is approximately 54" long.
