Pottery Acoma Seed Pot

This petite clay pot is known as a Seed Pot.  Historically, Native Americans used pots like this to store seeds over the winter to plant the following year.  The small opening protected the seeds from pests and spillage. The potter covered this pot with a White slip then added the bold geometric designs with Black slip.  Both the top and bottom feature beautiful designs.  The potter signed the bottom MC ACOMA.
Traditional Acoma pottery comes from the Pueblo in New Mexico. The pottery usually features very thin walls, a desirable characteristic. Most artists create their pottery using hand coiled techniques. They often use Black, White and Red slip colors.
This Seed Pot stands just about 1" tall and 2.75" in diameter. The opening measures 5/8" in diameter.  A previous owner had this pot in a collection. It remains in excellent condition.
