Native Americans who lived on the Northeast Coast created distinctive beads from the shells of the Quahog clam and Whelk snails. They called these purple and white beads wampum. Crafters strung early disc shaped wampum beads in simple strands. When tube shaped wampum beads made from shell and glass were available, they strung them together with a loom and made them into belts. Crafters created patterns by using one color bead as the background and the other for contrast. They used some of these belts to convey messages of war or peace. Wampum belts became symbols of status. Wampum Belts were used as straps for bags or worn as sashes.

European traders and politicians, using beads and trinkets, often exploited gift exchange to gain Native American favor or territory. With the scarcity of metal coins in New England, Wampum quickly evolved into a formal currency after European/Native contact, its production greatly facilitated by slender European metal drill bits. Wampum was mass produced in coastal southern New England. The Narragansetts and Pequots monopolized the manufacture and exchange of wampum in this area. Continue reading Wampum Beads History

Bead makers produced beads like these in Europe in the 1700s. Traders brought them to North America. Native American crafters used these glass beads in place of actual Quahog Shell Wampum beads.

From the 15th to the 20th century, traders carried European glass beads across the world. Native Americans highly desired glass beads as glass was then an unknown substance in North American. European glass beads, mostly from Venice, some from Holland and, later, from Poland and Czechoslovakia, became popular and sought after by Native Americans. Europeans realized early on that beads were important to Native Americans. Corporations such as the Hudson Bay Trading Company developed lucrative bead-trading markets with them. The Hudson Bay Trading Company was an organized group of explorers who ventured into the North American continent for trade expeditions during the 19th century.

Breech Cloths (also known as Breech Clouts) are lengths of fabric or leather. Native American men traditionally wear breech cloths (or breech clouts) alone or with Leggins. A Breech Cloth goes between the legs. The front and back are draped over a belt or Leather Lacing tie. They provide protection for sensitive areas of the body while allowing for freedom of movement, especially important for activities like hunting, gathering, and dancing. Men can wear them plain or decorate them with Brooches, Beadwork or ribbon work. They can also cut them from a wool blanket with a striped selvedge edge, and the stripes will serve as decoration.
Shell Tube Bead Strands with mother-of-pearl opalescence can be used like wampum beads. They measure approximately 8 mm long. They come on a strand that measures about 16 inches long. Each strands comes with approximately 50 beads. You can buy several and string them to create a striking necklace! Quantities are Limited!

Many Native American cultures consider the Thunderbird a symbolic animal. An 18th century Iroquois quilled hunting bag inspired our Thunderbird Tote Bag design.
