Wampum Turtle Earrings

Wampum Turtle Earrings

Wampum Turtle Earrings

Our Wampum Turtle Earrings are made with Real Quahog Wampum carved into little turtles with sterling silver french hook earwires.  Our favorite “gem” makes beautiful earrings!

Native Americans who lived on the Northeast Coast of North America harvested Quahog clams from the waters of the Atlantic. Quahog shells thrive in the waters from Cape Cod south to New York, with a great abundance of them in Long Island Sound. Native crafters carved the beautiful purple and white shells into pendants and beads.  These Wampum beads functioned as exchange items for the Northeastern Native Americans.

Today, skilled crafters use Quahog Wampum to create pendants, cabuchons and beads for contemporary jewelry.  At The Wandering Bull, we proudly offer a selection of Wampum earrings and pendants. We also provide you with Wampum beads, hairpipe and tubes so you can fashion your own creations!

Wampum Tubes

Wampum Tube Beads are among the most commonly used of wampum beads.  You can weave these Wampum Tube Beads into jewelry, traditional or contemporary Wampum Belts. Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay

Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay

Reproduction Clay Wampum Belt

This Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay features square and checkered designs. The crafter used reproduction clay wampum beads in white and purple to create the belt.  He wrapped the outside edges with red twine.  Then he created yarn tabs for each end.  At one end, he attached 1 inch Bone Hairpipe and at the other blue Crow Beads.  Braided yarn serves as ties.  You will see that a couple of purple Wampum Beads have broken and are missing (last photo).  The crafter wrapped one open space with red twine.

This Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay measures 33 inches long x 2.25 inches wide. The beaded section measures about 31 inches long.  The ties measure about 14 inches on one side and 9 inches on the other.   Because of the fragility of the clay beads, we recommend purchasing this belt for display only.  One of a Kind!

Native Americans who lived on the Northeast Coast created distinctive beads from the shells of the Quahog clam and Whelk snails.  They called these purple and white beads wampum. Crafters strung  early disc shaped wampum beads in simple strands.  When tube shaped wampum beads made from shell and glass were available, they strung them together with a loom and made them into belts. Crafters created patterns by using one color bead as the background and the other for contrast. They used some of these belts to convey messages of war or peace.  Wampum belts became symbols of status. Wampum Belts were used as straps for bags or worn as sashes.

This Wampum Belt 6 Row 1620 features a wigwam and cross designs. The crafter used glass Wampum Beads in White and Cobalt Blue and Braintanned Deerskin Leather lacing to create the belt.   The design was inspired by the arrival of the first Christians at Plymouth Rock in 1620.  The image in the center is a wigwam.

This Wampum Belt 6 Row 1620 measures 27 inches long x 3 inches wide. The fringe measures about 4 inches on one side and 3 inches on the other.     One of a Kind!

Wampum Beads History

Wandering Bull Wampum

What are Wampum Beads?

Wampum shell discs pendants
Wampum shells and discs

Wampum beads include the white shell beads fashioned from the North Atlantic channeled whelk shell, a sea snail with a spiral shape; and the white and purple beads made from the quahog, or Western North Atlantic hard-shelled clam. Quahogs are found in the waters from Cape Cod south to New York, with a great abundance in Long Island Sound. Wampum were used by the northeastern Native Americans as a form of gift exchange. European traders and politicians, using beads and trinkets, often exploited gift exchange to gain Native American favor or territory. With the scarcity of metal coins in New England, Wampum quickly evolved into a formal currency after European/Native contact, its production greatly facilitated by slender European metal drill bits. Wampum was mass produced in coastal southern New England. The Narragansetts and Pequots monopolized the manufacture and exchange of wampum in this area. Continue reading Wampum Beads History

History of Trade Beads

From the 15th to the 20th century, traders carried European glass beads across the world. Native Americans highly desired glass beads as glass was then an unknown substance in North American. European glass beads, mostly from Venice, some from Holland and, later, from Poland and Czechoslovakia, became popular and sought after by Native Americans. Europeans realized early on that beads were important to Native Americans. Corporations such as the Hudson Bay Trading Company developed lucrative bead-trading markets with them. The Hudson Bay Trading Company was an organized group of explorers who ventured into the North American continent for trade expeditions during the 19th century.

Breech Cloth Beaded Red

Breech Cloth Beaded Red

Beaded Red Wool Breech Cloth

Add this Breech Cloth Beaded Red to your dance clothes!  The crafter used Red Wool with Black Bias Tape Trim.  He created a beaded design using (mostly) White Seed Beads.  Double Curve designs appear above a series of arrow designs.  The crafter accented the Double Curve designs with a real Quahog Wampum Disc at the top.  Nine real Quahog Wampum Beads accent the row below.  Bright red fabric lines the back side. This Breech Cloth measures 62 inches long and 11 inches wide.  We got it from a collection.  It is in like new condition. One of a Kind!

Breech Cloths (also known as Breech Clouts) are lengths of fabric or leather. Native American men traditionally wear breech cloths (or breech clouts) alone or with Leggins.  A Breech Cloth goes between the legs. The front and back are draped over a belt or Leather Lacing tie. They provide protection for sensitive areas of the body while allowing for freedom of movement, especially important for activities like hunting, gathering, and dancing. Men can wear them plain or decorate them with Brooches, Beadwork or ribbon work.  They can also cut them from a wool blanket with a striped selvedge edge, and the stripes will serve as decoration.

Hat Glengarry with Turtle

Hat Glengarry with Turtle

Glengarry Style Hat with Beaded Snapping Turtle

This Hat Glengarry with Turtle will be a fabulous accessory for your next event, or an addition to your collection.  The crafter decorated the sides of this Red Wool cap  with Double Curve designs in White Seed Beads.  He accented these designs with real Quahog Wampum discs and tubes.  On the top, the crafter created a Snapping Turtle design with White Seed Beads.  He edged the bottom of the cap with Black Ribbon.  A bow and drops of more Black Ribbon appear on the back of the cap.  The crafter lined the inside of the cap with dark red fabric.

The Glengarry hat is a traditional Scottish cap that Scottish military regiments wore. The name comes from the Glengarry region in Scotland.  Traders imported hats like these for exchange with Native Americans during the 19th century. Iroquois and Wabanaki crafters decorated them with Beadwork and Ribbons to make colorful accessories.  This Hat Glengarry with Turtle measures about 11.5 inches long  and about 4.5 inches wide at the top.  We got this cap from a collection.  It is in new condition.  One of a Kind!

Necklace Imitation Bear Claw

Necklace Imitation Bear Claw

Imitation Grizzly Claw Necklace

Wear this Necklace Imitation Bear Claw to your next event or add it to your collection!  Master Craftsman Andy Bullock made this reproduction Grizzly Claw Necklace with 3.5 inch long  maroon colored plastic Grizzly Claws.  He added a painted overlay to give them a unique look.  Andy threaded them with strips of Selvedge Edge red wool with reproduction Mustard Seed Bead edge beading.  Fancy painted round glass  beads appear between each claw.   Inside the wool, Blue Padre Beads appear between each claw.

At the top edges, Andy added drops made with Black Reproduction Wampum Beads, trade beads and Brass Hawk Bells strung on White Braintanned Deerskin Leather Lacing.  For the chain, he strung several spotted Trade Beads, Large White Center Red Beads, and Old Fashioned Brass Beads.  The top is smoke colored Deerskin Leather Lacing.

Grizzly Claw necklaces were emblems of bravery for Native Americans. A complete necklace could take years to assemble. Some tribes believed such ornaments were sacred and held special ceremonies to honor them.  This Necklace Imitation Bear Claw measures approximately 17 inches long overall.  You can adjust the fit with the Deerskin Leather Lacing.  One of a Kind!
