Moccasins originated with many Native American groups, and each established their own variations based on geography and lifestyle.  Deerskin leather was a common material because deer were abundant.  Wearers find the leather is soft, breathable, and durable.  Crafters varied the designs for the function of the footwear.  They created soft soles for quiet walking in forested areas, and hard soles for walking on harder, rocky terrain.

Moccasins can have symbolic beadwork, quillwork, or painted patterns, reflecting the particular group, family, or even spiritual beliefs. The process of making this type of footwear included tanning the hide, cutting patterns, sewing with sinew, and often decorating with beads or porcupine quills.

Antique Algonquin moccasins

Identifying Antique Moccasins

Antique MoccasinsThis pair of antique moccasins was crafted in the early 20th century.  The crafter was probably a Northeastern Algonquin from the eastern part of Canada.  Their origin is determined by the construction and decoration of the moccasins.

The moccasins themselves are constructed with Braintanned Deerskin.  Native Americans tanned their own deerhides using the brain of the animal to soften the hide.  After it was soaked and worked, it was smoked to preserve it.  Until Europeans brought commercial tanning methods to North America, all animal leather was braintanned.  The moccasins were sewn together with cotton thread instead of real animal sinew, so they were created in the historical period. Top Grain #2 Black Color Deerskin

Black Top Grain Deerskin Leather

The Wandering Bull offers several types of Deerskin:

You are looking at our Deerskin (Top Grain) #2 – Black – Top Grain Deerskin has a smooth side and a suede side. Top Grain Leather refers to the outer side of a hide that contains the epidermis or skin layer. The tannery does not do anything to Top Grain hides in order to remove any imperfections on the surface. They only remove the hair. The grain remains in its natural state. This results in the best fiber strength, and greater durability. The natural Full-Grain surface wears better than other leather.

#2 Deerskin has some holes and imperfections. The tannery measures and marks the square footage on the Deerskin Hides.

You will find #2 Top Grain Deerskin hides perfect for making Moccasins, Bags, Eastern style Leggings, Leather Aprons, Deerskin Lace and much more!

We sell by the hide. Please select from available hides listed below. If you do not see the size you need, or if you need help, let us know what you are making and we can help with your selection (1-800-430-2855).

Uses of Seed Beads

Czech seed beads are high-quality glass beads that arrived in North America in the mid-19th century. Crafters prize them for their exceptional uniformity in size, shape, and color, which makes them an ideal choice for intricate beadwork designs.  Crafters use Seed Beads in variety of projects.  They attach them directly to fabric or leather with Lazy Stitch or Two Needle Embroidery.  Seed Beads are  ideal for creating loomwork strips.  Use these strips to decorate clothing and accessories or finish the end to wear them as bracelets or headbands.

Crafters also use Seed Beads to make beaded Rosettes or medallions.  These circular pieces of beadwork are the centerpiece of Rosette Necklaces with beaded chains.  Crafters may attach them directly to clothing and accessories as well. Sometimes they add a single or multiple rows of Seed Beads to the outer edge of a Rosette or clothing item to create a three-dimensional edge effect.  You can decorate many items with Seed Beads like these Seed Beads Greasy Yellow Mixed Sizes including Moccasins, Blanket Strips, and jewelry.

Wabanakis and Rusticators on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, 1840s – 1920s.  By Bunny McBride and Harald E.L. Prins.  185 pgs. Softcover.

This profusely illustrated book focuses on the resourcefulness of Native Americans living on Mount Desert Island in the 19th and early 20th centuries.   In addition to maintaining their own heritage, they interacted with the tourists (rusticators) who came to vacation in Bar Harbor.  They made and sold items like baskets, moccasins, beadwork, feathers and other items.  Some also served as fishing and tour guides.  You will read about successes and conflicts the Natives experienced during this time.

Quilled Antique Bag

Along the sides of the bag, the crafter added Lazy Stitch beadwork in Turquoise, Dark Blue and White Center Red Seed Beads.  More Dark Blue Seed Beads appear along one edge of the Quillwork.  At the top of the bag, you will see edge beading in White Center Red and Turquoise Seed Beads along with the remains of mostly missing quillwork.  At the very bottom you will see 3 inches of Braintanned Deerskin Leather Lacing fringe.

Antique Braintanned Leather Bag with Quillwork and Beadwork

This collectible Quilled Antique Bag is a fantastic find!  The crafter used Braintanned Deerskin Leather to make the bag.  He or she covered the bottom of the bag with Porcupine Quillwork in Red, Green and Orange quills.  Then the crafter attached 11 strips covered with more quills in Red, Green, Blue and Yellow.  The crafter attached these strips together at the bottom with a single Dark Blue Seed Bead between each one.

Native Americans use Quillwork to adorn a wide range of items, including moccasins, leggings, and dresses, as well as personal accessories like bags, pouches, and jewelry.  Historically, quillwork was primarily practiced by women, who gathered the quills and prepare them for use. They cleaned, softened, and dyed the quills using natural materials such as berries or roots.  This Quilled Antique Bag itself measures 5″ x 2″.  The quilled strips are 1.75″ long and the fringe is about 3″ long.  Overall the bag measures about 7″ long.

This Bag is very fragile due to its age.  You will see some quills and beads are missing.  We are selling it in a Ryker mount to help protect it.  One of a Kind!

You can decorate many items with Seed Beads including Moccasins, Blanket Strips, and jewelry.

Katsina Snow Maiden

Katsina Snow Maiden

Snow Maiden Nuvak’chin Kachina

This Katsina Snow Maiden or Nuvak’chin represents spirits and the coming winter.  The artist carved it from wood.  She wears winter clothing including a black skirt with red and green stripes, high white moccasins with ties on the sides and a large sash.  Over her shoulders she wears a fabric cape of white with black and red stripes.  Her mask features soft white hair tied in bundles on the sides of her head and a white collar.  The artist painted her face with traditional black eyes and nose.  Black dots appear above her eyes.  Instead of a mouth, she has black warrior marks.

This figure carries a multi-colored stick in her left hand.   The artist mounted her on a wood stand.  You will see ‘Berra Tawahongva’ written on the bottom of her stand and a small sticker that says ‘Snow Woman’.  One of a Kind!

Katsinas (or Kachinas) are supernatural beings in the Pueblo Indian traditions. The Pueblo tribes create Katsina dolls to give to children. Children use them to learn about the various Katsinas and not to play with.  This Katsina stands about 7.5 inches high including the stand.  The stick in her hand is not fastened and will come out.  This figure came from a collection so you will see slight signs of dust and wear.   One of a Kind!
