Cheyenne-Style Toy Cradle
This Cheyenne-style toy cradle exemplifies traditional craftsmanship. The artisan carved the wood base from durable hardwood oak and secured a rawhide platform to anchor the structure. They adorned the cradle with a vibrant geometric beadwork pattern, applying each bead to the Braintanned Deerskin hide. Inside, a soft cloth lining enhances comfort and contrast. The beadwork crafted with 13/0 cut seed beads—embodies cultural symbolism and showcases artistic mastery in miniature form. This Cheyenne-Style Toy Cradle measures 10.5″ long x 3″ wide and 3″ high.
One of a Kind
Cheyenne-style toys were more than play things. They passed down tradition, shared stories, and taught essential skills. Children played with dolls, miniature cradles, and handcrafted items that mirrored adult tools and ceremonial clothing. Made from natural materials like wood, rawhide, and sinew, these toys featured beadwork and quillwork that reflected tribal identity and values.
Toy cradles, often detailed replicas of ceremonial cradleboards, helped children practice caregiving and honored clan identity through protective beadwork. Together, these toys and games preserved Cheyenne heritage through craftsmanship, meaning, and play.
