Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls are a regalia item you will always see at Powwows. Whether simple or fancy, most women wear them or carry them on their arms.  Many Powwow circles do not allow women into the circle if they are not wearing or carrying a shawl.

Dance Shawls are not a pre-contact clothing item.  They were likely adapted from women’s blankets. They are made of fabric with fringe or ribbons decorating the edges.  Fancy Shawls feature beadwork or fabric or ribbon applique along with colorful fringe.

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Tradition in the History of a People. By Pauleena MacDougall. 264 pgs. Softcover.

Historians predicted the demise of the Penobscot Indians early in the nineteenth century, but the tribe is thriving at the opening of the twenty-first century. Although by the early 1800s the Penobscots had been rendered all but invisible to the dominant culture, by selectively adapting to changing circumstances, they have won back land and visibility.

The vital importance of employing elements of cultural resistance as a survival mechanism has, until now, been underestimated. A decade of political activism culminated in the precedent-setting 1980 Maine Indian Land Claims settlement. Today the Penobscots run small industries, manage their natural resources, and provide health services, K-through-8 education, and social services to the poor and elderly of their community.

MacDougall demonstrates that Penobscot legend, linguistics, dance, and oral tradition became -foundations of resistance- against assimilation into the dominant culture. She thoughtfully and accessibly reconstructs from published, archival, and oral sources the tribes metaphorical and triumphant Dance of Resistance — founded on spiritual power, reverence for homeland, and commitment to self-determination — from colonial times to the present. In a larger context, Dance of Resistances examination of the history of one Indian nation illustrates the complex interaction of cultural systems in America.

The Gourd Dance

Gourd Dance Rattles

The Legend and the History  –  The Dance and the Regalia

This article about the Native American Gourd Dance was written by Paul R. Burke in 1989.  We are presenting it here in its original format with his permission.  Paul discusses the history of the Dance and relates several legends related to its origins.  He further discusses how the dance has been done in more recent times and describes known variations of it.  Though its origins are unclear, the dance may have originated with the Southern Plains Tribes like the Kiowa, Comanche and Cheyenne.

Making Hoops For The Hoop Dance

Hoop Dancer at Memorial Day Powwow.

Learn to make inexpensive hoops that stand out

This article was originally published in Spring of 1988 in Whispering Wind Magazine by Art Tate.

The hoop dance is one of those special dances which enlivens any program or powwow. I have also found that it is a superb way to teach advanced Indian dancing to young people. Finding hoops can sometimes be a problem; and buying them can be expensive if you can find a source. This article will explain a simple, inexpensive and effective way to make hoops. And, of all the various hoops I have found, these are the most satisfactory for dancing.

Wampum Turtle Earrings

Wampum Turtle Earrings

Wampum Turtle Earrings

Our Wampum Turtle Earrings are made with Real Quahog Wampum carved into little turtles with sterling silver french hook earwires.  Our favorite “gem” makes beautiful earrings!

Native Americans who lived on the Northeast Coast of North America harvested Quahog clams from the waters of the Atlantic. Quahog shells thrive in the waters from Cape Cod south to New York, with a great abundance of them in Long Island Sound. Native crafters carved the beautiful purple and white shells into pendants and beads.  These Wampum beads functioned as exchange items for the Northeastern Native Americans.

Today, skilled crafters use Quahog Wampum to create pendants, cabuchons and beads for contemporary jewelry.  At The Wandering Bull, we proudly offer a selection of Wampum earrings and pendants. We also provide you with Wampum beads, hairpipe and tubes so you can fashion your own creations!

Several kinds of Native American crafts use Horse hair.  Most often, you will see it on the tips of feathers on Native American Dance Bustles and Native American Headdresses. Native American War Shirts can also be decorated with horse hair.

Our horse hair measures approximately 13″ – 15″ long. The White Horsehair is a natural color, so not bright white, but rather more of a beige.

Our horse hair comes in one ounce bundles.

Roach – Round Turkey Beard Eastern Style

Roach - Round Turkey Beard Eastern Style

Turkey Beard Eastern Style Roach

Master Craftsman Andy Bullock creates Turkey Beard Eastern Style Roaches for us.  He starts with a hand braided round yarn base. Instead of Porcupine Hair, he uses Turkey Beard hair to make the inner row of the roach and Dark Red Deer Hair for the outer row.

Round Eastern Style Roaches are one type of traditional headwear for Native American Dance Regalia and historical re-enactments.  Attach a Round Eastern Style Roach to your head with a small hair braid (or scalplock) pulled though the center hole and  fastened with a roach pin.  Porcupine hair roaches can vary in size and shape, with some being relatively short and compact, while others are longer and fuller.  Crafters can customize the design of the roach to reflect the individual wearer’s preferences or tribal traditions.  They arrange the dyed hair in rows or sections, to create a vibrant and eye-catching display.

We offer Turkey Beard Roaches as they are available. Quantities are limited!  They measures approximately 7″ tall on a 2.75″ base.

Powder Horn with strap

Powder Horn with strap

Powder Horn with Strap

Our stock Powder Horn with strap comes ready to use!  Polished natural cow horn includes a groove to hold the strap. Living History Re-enactors wear Powder Horns as an accessory. Native American dancers can wear them as part of their Native American Regalia.

Our Powder Horn includes a wooden stopper and a wooden base and a woven strap.

Powder horns are containers that hold gunpowder. Historically, soldiers made Powder Horns from cows, oxen or buffalo horns. Natural horn has the advantage of being waterproof and already hollow inside. Stoppers of wood or bone or horn were placed at each end of the horn. A soldier filled the horn with gunpowder at the large end, and dispensed powder from the smaller end.
Soldiers sometimes decorated their Powder Horns with carvings or inlays. They usually carried them with a long strap over their shoulder.

The Wandering Bull offers Powder Horns as collectible items. Living History Re-enactors also use Powder Horns as part of their kit.  You can choose from our standard stock Powder Horn or one of the One of a Kind horns that we acquire from other collectors.

Colors and curvature of each Powder Horn will vary.  Our stock Powder Horns measure approx 12″ long.
