Strike-a-Lite Crow Blue

Add this fully beaded Strike-a-Lite Bag Crow Blue to your collection. The crafter began with saddle color strap leather and hand-stitched a Tipi beadwork design across the front. They used brain-tanned deerskin lacing for neck strap and added Clue Crow Beads. Drops made with tin cones and Braintanned leather lacing.  The neck strap features Blue Crow beads.

For the beadwork, the crafter employed a lazy stitch technique using 11/0 seed beads. A background of Crow Pale Blue Seed Beads sets the stage for a striking pattern composed of Trans yellow, Trans Orange, trans Red, Blue, white, and Green colored seed beds.  To complete the piece, they added 20 tin cone drops along the bottom edge.

The bag measures 3.25″ wide, and 6.″ long including the tin cones.

Crow Loop Necklace

19th Century Style Crow Loop Necklace with long fringe

Crow Loop Necklace

This Crow Loop Necklace reproduces a 19th century style Native American regalia accessory.   Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created it with White Center Red, Light Blue, and Yellow Crow Beads and small oval Chevron beads. 14 inch long Deerskin Leather Fringe adorns the edges. This Northern Plains Loop Necklace is 10″ wide excluding the fringe. At the top, Andy used two white shell discs to make drops with White Center Red and Yellow Crow Beads and Chevron beads. The drops measure 9″ long.  More Deerskin Leather Leather lacing serves as the ‘chain’ to wear this Necklace.

Native Americans of the Plains wear Loop Necklaces as an alternative to Hairpipe Breastplates. Crow and Blackfeet Indians popularized Loop Necklaces. They are very appropriate for any Traditional Northern Style Dance Regalia.  These necklaces feature multiple strands of beads strung between two leather strips. Crafters also add Deerskin Leather fringe to the sides and shell, metal or beaded rosette Conchos to the top or the center. Additional drops can personalize each necklace.  This necklace is not only a beautiful piece of regalia but also carries cultural significance, symbolizing tradition and craftsmanship.

Fire Polished Beads

Crafters often overlook Fire Polish Beads for their projects! Use Fire Polish Beads in place of Glass Crow beads for a flashy, contemporary look. Fire Polish Beads are a must have bead for Southern Plains Native American Regalia.  Fire-polished beads are made by molding glass into specific shapes and then re-heating the beads to melt and polish their surfaces. This process gives the beads a bright, sparkling appearance. The heat causes the surface of the bead to melt just enough to become shiny, without the need for abrasive polishing. Fire-polished beads are popular in jewelry making due to their vibrant appearance and versatility. Crafters can use beads like these Beads Fire Polish 4mm to make  bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and other accessories to add a touch of sparkle and color.

Beads have a long and rich history in Native American culture, serving both decorative and spiritual purposes. The use of these beads in Native American beadwork has evolved over time, with each group developing its unique style and techniques. Because of this evolution, beads remain an integral part of Native American culture and continue to be used by contemporary Native American artists today.

Pony Beads 5/0

Pony Beads 5/0

5/0 Pony Beads

Pony Beads 5/0  are larger than Seed Beads, but smaller than Crow Beads.   They get their name from the pony and mule trains that brought these beads to Western North America. Pony Beads were available to the Native Americans of the Plains before the introduction of Seed Beads.

The variety of beads introduced to North America is vast. Small glass beads are often known as Seed Beads. Italy was one of the most prolific manufacturers of these small glass beads. Most of these beads were made using the “drawn” method. A glass blower would blow a bubble in a molten blob of glass. Other workers, often young boys, would grasp the soft glass bubble and pull it into a long thin tube. The air bubble would create the hole going the length of the tube. Some references state that these tubes could be up to 150 feet long.  Craftsmen broke the tube into small pieces after it cooled. Then they reheated the pieces and tumbled them to smooth the edges.  They sorted the finished beads by size.

Pony Beads in size 5/0  are the larger of the Pony Beads.   These Beads measure approx. 5 mm.  You can use Single Ply Imitation Sinew or Beaded Thread with these. You will get approx. 300 beads per ounce.

You can purchase  5/0 Beads in one ounce or 1/2 kilo packages.

Round Glass Beads

Round Glass Beads

8mm Colored Round Glass Beads

Bead makers have used metal “mandrels” to make Round Glass Beads for hundreds of years. They gathered melted glass on a narrow metal rod, then removed the bead when it cooled.

You will find these beads excellent for chokers and necklaces. The clear shades show their colors very well when light shines through them.

The holes are smaller than the holes in our Crow Beads. The smaller holes will accommodate single ply sinew, thinner threads and tiger tail.

We sell them in bags of 100.
