Czech Glass Crow Beads

Czech Glass Crow Beads

Crow Beads from the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic makes 9mm Glass Crow Beads known for their uniform size and shape.  Crow Beads are among the largest glass beads used by Native Americans for jewelry, fringe and other embellishments.  You can use them to decorate Dreamcatchers, Leather Lacing on Necklaces, or string them for simple necklaces.

The holes for these  Beads measure approx. 3mm wide.  They will accommodate 1/8″ Deerskin Leather Lacing or smaller Round Leather Lacing.

We offer them in packages of approx. 100 or 1000 beads!

Please keep in mind that colors are difficult to show on computer screens and colors can vary.  Remember to order enough of a color to complete your project because individual dye lots will vary.

We also offer India Crow Beads. These show less uniformity in color and shape.  They  lend a nice old-fashioned look to your projects.

Moccasins Crow Style Mens

Moccasins Crow Style Mens

Men’s Fully Beaded Crow Style Moccasins

These Moccasins Crow Style Mens feature fully beaded vamps. The crafter made them with soft Deerskin Leather. Then the crafter used White, Green, Transparent Dark Green, White Center Red, and Turquoise Seed Beads to create the geometric designs.  The beadwork covers the vamps and goes around the sides of the moccasins to the heels.   He or she added Strap Leather to the bottom for soles.  Deerskin Leather Lacing serve as ties.

We got these men’s moccasins from a collection. A previous owner wore them.  You will see signs of wear and some soiling on the leather.  The beaded designs show places where it has loosened, but no bead loss. On the inside of one of the moccasins you will find printed writing in German.

You will find the moccasins well constructed and in wearable condition.  If you are looking for a pair of wide Moccasins, try these on for size!  Don’t miss these fully beaded mocs for your next powwow.  One of a Kind!

Pony Beads 5/0

Pony Beads 5/0

5/0 Pony Beads

Pony Beads 5/0  are larger than Seed Beads, but smaller than Crow Beads.   They get their name from the pony and mule trains that brought these beads to Western North America. Pony Beads were available to the Native Americans of the Plains before the introduction of Seed Beads.

The variety of beads introduced to North America is vast. Small glass beads are often known as Seed Beads. Italy was one of the most prolific manufacturers of these small glass beads. Most of these beads were made using the “drawn” method. A glass blower would blow a bubble in a molten blob of glass. Other workers, often young boys, would grasp the soft glass bubble and pull it into a long thin tube. The air bubble would create the hole going the length of the tube. Some references state that these tubes could be up to 150 feet long.  Craftsmen broke the tube into small pieces after it cooled. Then they reheated the pieces and tumbled them to smooth the edges.  They sorted the finished beads by size.

Pony Beads in size 5/0  are the larger of the Pony Beads.   These Beads measure approx. 5 mm.  You can use Single Ply Imitation Sinew or Beaded Thread with these. You will get approx. 300 beads per ounce.

You can purchase  5/0 Beads in one ounce or 1/2 kilo packages.

Beaded Child’s Robe Reproduction

Exquisite! This One of a Kind Beaded Child’s Robe will become a treasured heirloom! Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created this Reproduction Child’s Robe on White Braintanned Deerskin Leather.  He used a whole Deerhide and kept its original shape.

Andy used Lazy Stitch to apply a variety of bead colors including Pony Trader Blue, Cheyenne Pink, Cobalt Blue, French Transparent Dark Pink, Greasy Yellow, Transparent Green and White Seed Beads. He added Deer Dew Claw Drops threaded with Braintanned Deerskin Leather. To these he added Blue Crow Beads and broken antique Feather Beads.

This Robe is unsmoked Braintanned Leather. You will have Rawhide if it becomes wet.  The back shows discoloration because the leather is not smoked. But you will not see threads from the beadwork because Andy does such fabulous work.

This robe measures 42″ at the widest point and 44″ at the longest point. The beaded design measures 24″ x 19″.

Blanket Strip – Dark Red

Blanket Strip - Dark Red

Blanket Strip – Dark Red

This Blanket Strip – Dark Red comes with gorgeous Pony Bead Rosettes. Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created this Blanket Strip with Dark Red wool.  He beaded the strip and Rosettes on Braintanned Deerskin Leather. Twisted Braintanned Deerskin tassels hang from the center of each of the four Rosettes. White Center Red Crow Beads decorate each tassel.

Andy beaded this strip with 8/0 Pony Beads. For the rosettes he used Reproduction White Center Cranberry, Pony Trader Blue, Mustard, Cobalt Blue and White Pony beads. He composed the remainder of the strip with 7 rows of lazy stitch beaded with 8/0 Pony Beads in Pony Trader Blue, Cobalt Blue, and White.

The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when two Braintanned Buffalo Hides were sewn together to create one large robe. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.

The beaded portion of this Blanket Strip measures 56″ long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 7.5″ in diameter. The blanket itself measures approximately 65″ x 45″.

Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay

Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay

Reproduction Clay Wampum Belt

This Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay features square and checkered designs. The crafter used reproduction clay wampum beads in white and purple to create the belt.  He wrapped the outside edges with red twine.  Then he created yarn tabs for each end.  At one end, he attached 1 inch Bone Hairpipe and at the other blue Crow Beads.  Braided yarn serves as ties.  You will see that a couple of purple Wampum Beads have broken and are missing (last photo).  The crafter wrapped one open space with red twine.

This Wampum Belt 5 Row Clay measures 33 inches long x 2.25 inches wide. The beaded section measures about 31 inches long.  The ties measure about 14 inches on one side and 9 inches on the other.   Because of the fragility of the clay beads, we recommend purchasing this belt for display only.  One of a Kind!

Native Americans who lived on the Northeast Coast created distinctive beads from the shells of the Quahog clam and Whelk snails.  They called these purple and white beads wampum. Crafters strung  early disc shaped wampum beads in simple strands.  When tube shaped wampum beads made from shell and glass were available, they strung them together with a loom and made them into belts. Crafters created patterns by using one color bead as the background and the other for contrast. They used some of these belts to convey messages of war or peace.  Wampum belts became symbols of status. Wampum Belts were used as straps for bags or worn as sashes.

Knife Sheath Quilled Panel

Knife Sheath Quilled Panel

Wool Knife Sheath with Quillwork Panel

You will adore this Knife Sheath Quilled Panel! Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created this sheath from Red Wool and calico fabric. It features a multicolor loomed Quillwork panel with a geometric design at the top of the opening on the front. Andy edged the sheath with Navy Blue ribbon and Pony Trader Blue Seed Beads.   Strands of  White, Navy Blue, Transparent Pink and Greasy Yellow Seed Beads hang as fringe with tufts of Green wool yarn.  Below the fringe you will see Andy beaded geometric designs in Greasy Yellow, White, Cheyenne Pink, Crow Pale Blue, Cobalt Blue and Pony Trader Blue Seed Beads.

Then he created a floral design at the top of the sheath with Blue, Maize, Cheyenne Pink and Transparent Green Seed Beads.  Strands of Trade Beads with Red wool tufts hang from each side and the bottom of the piece.  Andy covered the back with calico fabric.  You will love the superb craftsmanship evident in this piece.  One of a Kind!

The beaded knife sheath serves both functional and artistic purposes. Functionally, the sheath protects the knife blade from damage and provides a secure and convenient way to carry and store the knife. Artistically, the intricate beadwork and quillwork showcase the skill and creativity of the artis and can reflect the cultural heritage of the crafter’s Native American community.  Crafters typically create beaded knife sheaths using small beads, often made of glass, bone, or metal. They weave or sew these onto a base material, such as Deerskin leather or fabric.

This Knife Sheath Quilled Panel measures 11.5 inches long not including the bottom tassel.  It measures just about 5 inches wide.  One of a Kind!

Breastplate Kit – Plains Style

Breastplate Kit - Plains Style

Native American Plains Style Breastplate Kit

Our Plains Breastplate Kit will help you make a great addition to your Dance Regalia.  Wear your completed Plains Breastplate bare chested, over a shirt or with a vest.

The Plains Breastplate Kit includes 4″ Hairpipe, our own 36 Hole Leather Breastplate strips, 2 colors of Glass Crow Beads, Imitation Sinew and Deerskin Leather Lacing.  The finished length of the Breastplate will be approximately 19″ long.

Choose Plastic Hairpipe (which makes it much lighter to wear) or Bone Hairpipe.  You can dye the Bone Hairpipe in tea or coffee to give a aged look.

The Comanche Indians are considered the originators of the Hairpipe Breastplate. They first created Breastplates in the mid 19th century. Other tribes of the Great Plains adopted this accessory as well.  The term “Hairpipe” describes the long, slim, hollow beads made from animal bone that we use to make Breastplates.
