This whimsy comes in the shape of a wall pocket. The artist chose Clear Seed Beads for most of the 3 dimensional design. He or she also used Transparent Amber Seed Beads and Silver lined Basket Beads. The bottom and side feature loops of Clear and Silver lined Basket Beads. The design features Floral motifs on the top and a Bird on a branch on the pocket.
Polished cotton in a reddish color covers the front and a neutral colored fabric covers the back and the inside of the pocket.
This Whimsy came from a previous owner, but it remains in good condition. You will see some bead loss and places where the fabric has torn or worn away. Additionally, you will see staining and discoloration on the fabric on the back and inside the pocket.
This Beaded Whimsy will make an unusual addition to your antique or whimsy collection!
It measures approx 8″ tall x 6″ wide not including the Basket Bead loops. The pocket extends about 4″ from the back of the Whimsy.

This Whimsy came from a previous owner, but it remains in good condition. You will see some bead loss and places where the fabric has torn or worn away. Beaded Boot Pincushion/Whimsy

This Whimsy comes in the shape of a ladies’ boot. The front shows a dark red fabric. Crafters often create Whimsies with velveteen, but we can see no nap left on this fabric to suggest it was velveteen. Polished cotton in a tan color makes up the back.
Someone added a braided Wool Yarn loop to the back of this Whimsy. You will see a frayed place on the yarn, so you may not be able to hang it with this yarn. You will see some staining on the back, but the beadwork remains intact.

Whimsy Watch Pocket Raised
This Beaded Antique Raised Watch Pocket Whimsy has a raised pictorial design made with with clear, yellow and blue seed beads and gray basket beads on red cotton fabric. Whimsy Pincushion Berry Drops

Polished cotton in a rich teal color makes up the back. You will see obvious wear on the edges. Some beads are missing from the pin cushion itself. The bead loss on the berries is obvious. Only two beaded tassels that hung from the berries remain.

This Pin Cushion features a bird design surrounded by leaves in the corners. One corner still has looped tassels that probably appeared on the other corners as well. The crafter beaded the design on a tan velveteen fabric. Most of the nap of this fabric has worn away. Polished cotton in a tan color makes up the back.
You will see many beads are missing from the edges of the pin cushion itself. Most of the design remains intact but the beads have become very dark. Some of the clear beads are red and yellow. You will also see Green Seed beads in two of the corners. A white paint like substance appears in a few spots on the front. A previous owner used this Pin Cushion, and it still has several pins in it.

The Beadwork on this Pin Cushion is beautiful, but the piece has not aged well. In addition to the holes in the back fabric, the front shows significant tears. Much of the velveteen has worn away. Most of the beadwork seems to be intact, but you will see that some of the edge tassels have come loose. Some of the edge beads have fallen off as well. You will find several pins remain in this Whimsy, signs that a previous owner used it for a Pin Cushion.

This 1902 Beaded Matchbox Whimsy was made using Amber, Blue and Clear Pony Beads. The crafter beaded a raised pictorial design and the year on the front. You will also see some gray and tan Basket Beads along with brass colored sequins in the design. The crafter added Beaded Looped Tassels made with pony and basket beads. The tassels have some bead loss. The whimsey has a threaded loop on the top to hang it up. The red fabric is faded on the front and has worn away only in a few small sections at the bottom where the cardboard backing shows through. The silk fabric on the back of the piece stained a dark brown color.
The 1902 Matchbox Whimsey measures about 6.25″ at the widest section and 8.25″ tall not including the 2″ tassels. Each pocket is 2″ x 1″ at the opening.

Antique Whimsy Lot
Four unique Antique Beaded Whimsies come with this Lot. You will get a Mini Purse, a Pincushion like ornament and two Wall Pockets.
These are classic examples of Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these Whimsies for the tourist trade.
The Mini Purse comes in Dark Red fabric over a cardboard base with Clear Pony Beads and Basket Bead designs. The front flap features a Botanical design and the back has a Bird design. It measures about 3.75″ long x 2.5″ wide. The fabric has deteriorated and it has suffered noticeable bead loss. Only one of the closure clasps remains and one of the loop tassels has fallen off.
The Pincushion Ornament features a rounded top and a pointed bottom. The crafter used Red fabric for the front and what may have been Blue on the back. He or she bound the edges with bias tape. On the front, the crafter created a medallion design in Clear and Transparent Green Seed Beads and Blue Basket Beads. Below this, you will find White Seed Beads spelling NIAGARA FALLS 1924. A loop of assorted Seed Beads at the top allowed the Pincushion to hang. This piece measures about 4.5″ x 4.5″ at its widest points. You will see some bead loss in the word ‘FALLS’ and the Fabric has faded in color. Otherwise, this piece remains in very good condition for its age.
The smaller Wall Pocket has lost most of its Red Wool Fabric and edging. Most of the Clear Seed Bead and Basket Beads that form the Botanical designs remain. The back fabric is intact. It measures about 6.5″ tall x 4″ wide.
The larger Wall Pocket features a deep Wine colored velveteen on the front. The Clear Seed Beads of the floral medallions remain mostly intact, but the Basket Bead centers have come off of most of them. You will see further bead loss around the edges and some of the Clear Seed Bead tassel loops have come off. If there was a hanging loop at the top, it is no longer present. The back fabric shows spotting and small holes. The front pocket retains its shape, the cardboard has not collapsed. This Wall Pocket measures about 8.5″ tall (not including the Beaded Tassels) x 5″ at the widest point.

Whimsy Lot Vintage
This lot of vintage whimsies includes a canoe, blue strawberry and a small purse.
The canoe is made with red velvet and 10/0 seed beads around the border. The crafter used Yellow and Blue beads to spell out the word Canoe on the side of the piece and they used multi colored beads to make four loops on the bottom. Blue fabric lines the inside of the canoe and a red ribbon makes the hanging loop. The canoe measures 4.5″ long, 2″ tall and 1.5″ at the widest part of the boat.
The crafter made the strawberry with blue and green velvet, dark green 8/0 pony beads around the center and on the hanging loop. In addition, they added three hanging tassels with white and blue seed beads. The strawberry measures 3.5″ tall and 2″ in diameter at the widest part on the top.
The purse is older than the other two items. The crafter made it with yellow fabric on the outside and red the inside. The piece features an abstract floral design of blue, white, yellow green and clear 10/0 seed beads. The top opens and has a clasp to close it. The purse measures 3″ long and 2.25″ tall and 1″ wide.
This Lot of Whimsies remains in very good condition and will make an great addition to your collection!

If there is a universal child’s toy, it may well be a doll. Whether hastily made from scrap material at hand, or painstakingly made to exacting detail, dolls “speak” to our humanity. At first glance, dolls are simple play-things… suffering the ravages of many other mere “toys”. However, there are many other reasons dolls are created and decorated for children. Dolls may also be used to teach children important cultural and educational lessons in dress, hair style, adornment and dexterity.
Some dolls are created for specific purposes or occasions. Others are made with whimsy and artistic license. There are no limits to the variety of dolls. This author is particularly interested in beadwork as a decorative medium. By making a basic cloth doll body, there are unlimited ways to construct and decorate these miniature personalities.
