Beading Needles

Beading Needles

English Beading Needles

Beading Needles sizes correspond to the size Seed Bead you intend to use – Use 10/0 needles with 10/0 Seed Beads. For projects that require passing through the same bead several times, consider using the next smaller size needle. 10/0 is the largest, 15/0 is the smallest.

Choose packages of 4  or 25 needles.  Beading Needles measure 2″ long.

Our Extra Long 12/0 beading needles are available in packages of 10 only.  They measure 3″ long.

11/0 Needles are available in packages of 25 only.  They are made in China.

Deer Bone Needles

Deer Bone Needles

Deer Bone Needles

We have several packages of natural Deer Bone Needles available. Our crafter made them from Deer leg bones.  Each comes with a hole in the top for your Thread, Sinew or Lacing. You can use these natural Needles to sew Leather (punch holes with an Awl first) with Leather Lacing.  They will also be a nice addition to a display of historical tools for Living History Events and educational programs.

Historically, Native Americans used Bone Needles to sew Clothing, Nets, Mats and Baskets.  They have used the bones of several animals, including Deer, Buffalo and Elk to make Needles and other tools.

Many of these Needles measure about 3″ long. Some will be smaller. They are a natural product, so expect variations in size and color.

We sell these in packages of 3.  Limited Quantities!

Glovers Needles

Glovers Needles

Glovers Needles

Glovers Needles are ideal for sewing leather because they have a tri-cornered point, rather than a blunt, round point. You will find them very useful for moccasin construction and any heavy sewing.

These Needles come in several sizes. Size 1 is the largest. For light leather work (like medicine pouches) we suggest using a Size 8. You can use a Size 10 to sew 10/0 beads to leather.

We sell these Needles in packages of 5 or 25.

Available in 5 Sizes.  Size 1 is the largest, size 10 is the smallest.

  • Size 1     (2″ long)
  • Size 3    (1.75″ long)
  • Size 5    (1 5/8″ long)
  • Size 8     (1 3/8″ long)
  • Size 10  (1.25″ long)

Beading Needles – Sharps

Beading Needles - Sharps

Beading Needles – Sharps

Sharps are shorter than Beading Needles. Crafters use them for Lazy Stitch beadwork and other types of sewn-in beadwork because they are less apt to bend.

Use the same size needle as the beads you are working with., eg: 10/0 Needles for 10/0 Seed Beads.  For projects that require passing through the same bead more than once, consider using the next size down.  Sharps measure 1″ long.

We sell Sharps in packages of 25.  Choose 10/0, 11/0 or 12/0 sizes.

These ‘whimsical’ creations often come in practical shapes and styles like pincushions, match holders, picture frames, needle cases, bags and small decorative cushions.  One of a Kind!

Whimsy Pincushion Berry Drops

Whimsy Pincushion Berry Drops

Whimsy Pincushion Berry Drops

A crafter created this Pincushion Whimsy with Berry Drops  using Clear Seed Beads and Clear Basket Beads.  It is a classic example of the Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This Pin Cushion features a botanical design. It comes with three  beaded “berry” drops. Unlike the strawberries that held sand for sharpening your sewing needles, stuffing fills these berries.  One of them has broken open. Strands of clear beads connect the three berries.

Polished cotton in a rich teal color makes up the back.  You will see obvious wear on the edges.  Some beads are missing from the pin cushion itself. The bead loss on the berries is obvious.  Only two beaded tassels that hung from the berries remain.

This Beaded Berry Drop Pincushion Whimsy will make an unusual addition to your antique or whimsy collection!

It measures 3.5″ square. The overall length measures 5.25″ long.

Caribou Hair Art

Caribou Hair Art

Tufted Caribou Hair Art in Frame

Find a place in your home for this unique artwork from Canada.  Manitoba crafter Jessie Wastasticoot created this Caribou Hair Art  using multi colored caribou hair tufts.  In addition to tufted hair art, Jessie has also created caribou hair sculptures.  The delicate three dimensional flower and leaf designs pop away from the black background.  Jessie chose white, yellow, blue and pink for the flowers and buds with a soft green for the leaves.  On the back you will find a card that discusses Canadian Native Caribou Hair Tuftings and Sculptures.   The card is signed Jessie Wastasticoot  July 1996 Churchill Manitoba.

This caribou art comes in a wood frame with a glass front.  The frame measures about 12 inches x 10 inches and 1.5 inches deep.  We got this artwork from a collection.  You will see scratches on the wood frame.  Some of the colors on the tufting have faded.  It is best to display this piece out of direct light.  One of a Kind!

Canadian Natives use caribou parts for food, tools, weapons and needles.  They used the sinew for thread and the hide and hair for warm clothing.

Pony Beads 5/0

Pony Beads 5/0

5/0 Pony Beads

Pony Beads 5/0  are larger than Seed Beads, but smaller than Crow Beads.   They get their name from the pony and mule trains that brought these beads to Western North America. Pony Beads were available to the Native Americans of the Plains before the introduction of Seed Beads.

The variety of beads introduced to North America is vast. Small glass beads are often known as Seed Beads. Italy was one of the most prolific manufacturers of these small glass beads. Most of these beads were made using the “drawn” method. A glass blower would blow a bubble in a molten blob of glass. Other workers, often young boys, would grasp the soft glass bubble and pull it into a long thin tube. The air bubble would create the hole going the length of the tube. Some references state that these tubes could be up to 150 feet long.  Craftsmen broke the tube into small pieces after it cooled. Then they reheated the pieces and tumbled them to smooth the edges.  They sorted the finished beads by size.

Pony Beads in size 5/0  are the larger of the Pony Beads.   These Beads measure approx. 5 mm.  You can use Single Ply Imitation Sinew or Beaded Thread with these. You will get approx. 300 beads per ounce.

You can purchase  5/0 Beads in one ounce or 1/2 kilo packages.
