Beaded Blanket Strip on Ayers Red Wool Blanket

Beaded Blanket Strip

Pony Beaded Blanket Strip features 6" Rosettes. Master Craftsman Andy Bullock beaded the rosettes on Braintanned Deerskin Leather.  Beaded Braintanned Deerskin tassels hang from the center of each rosette. He then attached this to a large red wool blanket to create this fabulous reproduction Beaded Blanket Strip.
Craftsman Bullock beaded this strip with 8/0 Pony  Beads. For the rosettes he used Reproduction Turquoise, Light Purple and Translucent Navy Blue and White pony beads.  He composed the remainder of the strip with 9 rows of lazy stitch beaded with  8/0 Pony Beads in Mustard, White, Turquoise, Dark Red, Translucent Navy, Blue and Pony Trader Blue.
The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when two Braintanned Buffalo Hides were sewn together to create one large robe. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes.  They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.
The beaded portion of this Blanket Strip measures  5.5" wide and 55" long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 6" in diameter. The blanket itself measures 76" x 66". Additionally,  the tag in the corner of the blanket says "Ayers" Pure Wool.
